Members of the Silent Generation are the most likely to view this as a bad thing for society. Similarly, the youngest Republicans stand out in their views on the role of government and the causes of climate change. Gen Z Republicans are much more likely than older generations of Republicans to desire an increased government role in solving problems. About half (52%) of Republican Gen Zers say government should do more, compared with 38% of Millennials, 29% of Gen Xers and even smaller shares among older generations. The fact that this generation is so much more likely to consider themselves a part of the LGBTQ+ community is the clear driver of this difference. Understanding the whys behind this, and the importance of communities and representation in their journeys, could help brands to more authentically connect with and support them.

Gen Xers were the first generation to grow up with personal computers to some extent, thus becoming tech-savvy. They also experienced shaky economic times as children and young adults in the 1980s and ’90s. Gen Xers are typically described as being resourceful, independent, and keen on maintaining work-life balance. They tend to be more liberal on social issues and more ethnically diverse than boomers. Gen Xers were sometimes described as slackers or whiners, particularly in the 1990s, although those descriptions have been contested.
Larger shares of Gen X voters (37%), Boomers (44%) and Silents (53%) said they plan to support President Trump. When it comes to race relations, Gen Zers and Millennials are about equally likely to say that blacks are treated less fairly than whites in this country. Roughly two-thirds of Gen Zers and Millennials say this, compared with about half of Gen Xers and Boomers and smaller shares among the Silent Generation. Generation Z represents the leading edge of the country’s changing racial and ethnic makeup. A bare majority (52%) are non-Hispanic white – significantly smaller than the share of Millennials who were non-Hispanic white in 2002 (61%).
The Pew Research survey data was collected in 2016, so opinions on more recent events have not been collected. Last but not least, Millennials are the only generation to note the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, and the subsequent Great Recession, as a momentous event. This makes sense considering many of them began their careers in its aftermath.
Despite their young age, Gen Z have realized that there’s no such thing as “love at first sight that lasts forever,” and that one needs to put in work and effort to make a relationship work. The shaky economic situation of Gen Y is further linked to how they approach relationships. They are far less loyal to their partners, and the breakups are less formal than they used to be in Boomers’ and Xers’ youth.
